1. House Of Wu - True Crime: Streets Of L.A.
Cult classic True Crime: Streets of L.A. was one of the better earlier Grand Theft Auto knock-offs, and for the majority of its campaign proved to be a fairly grounded action game centered around Los Angeles' underworld of organised crime.
But the latter-game chapter "House Of Wu" turns the gritty combat on its head by introducing zombies totally out of nowhere, before a boss fight against Ancient Wu sees you fending off skull-faced demons, ghostly concubines, and a goddamn dragon, because why not?
Not a single scrap of dialogue up to this point suggested the game was ever going to go full-out supernatural, and especially for those who bought the game due to its apparent similarities to the GTA series, it marked a completely ridiculous tonal departure.
It is perhaps the quintessential "that escalated quickly" moment in video games.
