10 Trailers That Misled You About Awesome Video Games
1. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty (2001)
Hideo Kojima is one of the most visionary creators working today. From surreal and cerebral plots to innovative and bizarre mechanics, his brilliance is seen in everything he makes. Nowhere is his unique approach to game design better seen than in the Metal Gear series.
Following the runaway success of Metal Gear Solid for the PlayStation One, players couldn't wait to regain control of gruff protagonist Snake for more taut stealth action.
The atmospheric trailer for sequel Sons of Liberty put Snake back in the spotlight as it showed the protagonist carefully sneaking past guards and engaging in tactical gunfights. It had everything that players wanted to see, and with one trailer boldly stating that "Snake is back!", fans had no doubt that they'd be accompanying the iconic character on another exhilarating mission.
What players didn't know at the time, however, was that Kojima was also an expert in deception. The trailer only contained footage from the game's Tanker prologue. After completing this section, the game revealed that the actual protagonist was newcomer Raiden.
Although fans were initially unhappy about being blatantly misled, this sequel has since become recognised as another one of Kojima's masterpieces.
