10 Trailers That Misled You About Awesome Video Games
2. The Last Of Us Part II (2018)
Fans were eager to reunite with Joel and Ellie after watching their bond grow throughout The Last Of Us. Excitement only grew when the pair featured in a sombre announcement trailer for the sequel in 2016, which showed Ellie playing guitar with bruised hands.
Subsequent trailers continued to emphasise this game's dark themes by hinting that Ellie would be embarking on a violent quest for revenge. Crucially, however, Joel continued to appear in the marketing material. While fans understood that the spotlight would be on Ellie, a shot of Joel telling her that he wouldn't let her "do this on [her] own" appeared to confirm that he'd be accompanying her.
However, it wasn't long before players realised that they'd been deceived when Joel was killed in a harrowing scene that takes place early in the game.
Although concealing this fan-favourite character's brutal death was done to avoid spoiling a savage emotional blow, which would become the catalyst for Ellie's journey, some fans were understandably angered by what they considered to be false advertising.
Even with its controversial marketing, The Last Of Us Part II's visceral exploration of violence and vengeance is nevertheless a masterpiece of modern gaming.
