Game development is a lengthy and complex process in which it's normal for a project to undergo many changes as it evolves and grows. It's understandable, then, that not everything players see in early trailers will make it into the final release. Although most first looks still provide an accurate depiction of what the game will be, there are some instances where studios played fast and loose with the truth.

While No Man's Sky and Cyberpunk 2077 are notable examples of developers promising more than they could deliver, one of the most glaring pieces of marketing misdirection was BioShock: Infinite's announcement during E3 2011.

Part trailer, part demo, this visually stunning introduction to the third entry of the acclaimed series highlighted its new setting, dynamic combat, and partnership between protagonist Booker and Elizabeth. It looked incredible.

What players eventually got, however, was a drastically scaled down version of what was shown. The grand world that was presented became linear levels. The impressive skyline combat was simplified, and instead of creating devastatingly powers with Elizabeth, the companion was relegated to tossing items to players during fights.

Despite being nothing like its initial trailer, BioShock: Infinite was still a spectacular and thought-provoking game.
