Everybody loves a fan theory, especially if it’s a convincing one. A particularly strong theory revolved around Super Mario Bros 3, where a lot of fans noticed the whole thing appears to be a stage play. Parts of the scenery look bolted on and cast shadows against the backdrop, and it even opens with a curtain rising.

This theory quickly spread throughout the fanbase, but it remained just a theory for years. That’s until an interview with producer Shigeru Miyamoto, where the question was put to him and responded with a nod in the affirmative.

He didn’t explain the logic behind the design choice, but Miyamoto has earned the right to do whatever the hell he wants at this stage; if he wanted it that way, that's good enough for us.
