The only entry on our list funded entirely by crowdfunding, 24 hours was all it took for Obsidian to secure the required $1.1 million backing to produce Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, a sequel to their role-playing debut star, Pillars of Eternity.
The campaign started up on Fig obtained more than $4.4 million in backing within a month, and while those contributions showed the game has a strong community following after its maiden release, PoE remains something of a sleeping giant.
The original won several “Best RPG of 2015” awards and was nominated for further plaudits, such as IGN’s overall Game of the Year, but its sequel hasn’t exactly received the boatload of media attention it deserves.
Explore the Deadfire by land and sea in a game that promises to combine elements of Final Fantasy-esque writing with Dragon Age’s discovery format and a battle system that resembles World of Warcraft.
Obsidian say they’ve taken the feedback gained from their first hit to fashion an even better game this time around, and the PC armies would be wise to keep tabs and see if they’re on the money.
