4. Red Dead Redemption- Ending
John Marston had finally faced his mentor turned nemesis, Dutch Van Der Linde, and it seemed that pesky job commissioned by those crooked agents was finally done and dusted. He hops on his trusty steed and heads for home, as another beautifully placed song chimes the entire way. This was it, a happy reunion with my family for the ending of the game, or so I thought. In fact, once you reach the ranch the game is still pretty far from over. John immediately takes on the role of rancher again, and you will be running from the Great Plains trying to round up wild horses, all the way up through Tall Trees trying teach young Jack Marston how to hunt and take care of himself. I began wondering where this was going to end up, if they didn't end the game with him reuniting with his family, how were they going to end it? John was sitting in his barn having a nice little father/son bonding moment when Uncle starts screaming frantically. You join him outside and see people gathering on the horizon. You know a battle is coming and quickly send Jack inside the house. From there wave after wave of army men begin surrounding your ranch, most armed with guns, some armed with Molotovs. Once cleared, you sprint for the house to check on your precious family. They are all well and good but things are far from over, another battle ensues this time from the comfort of your own front porch. You finally get through this wave of baddies but not before Uncle is taken down in the hail of bullets. You pay your respects but must be on your way because more enemies are gathering on the horizon. You protect your family all the way to the barn and let out a sigh of relief. Lets get a horse and get the hell out of here! However, John only readies one horse and on that one horse he sends his wife and son to safety while he stays behind. Hesitant in the barn for a moment you begin thinking here we go, here comes an epic battle. John slowly opens the door to reveal a pretty big firing squad all aimed at him. Dead eye kicks in, and as you're placing your shots you lose just a little bit of faith, because then you realize you don't quite have enough shots to take out everyone. You fire, but they fire triple the shots back at you. You are left sitting there; mouth gaped, watching your favourite hero take his last breath. It was heart breaking and infuriating and...Confusing. Did Rockstar really just kill their protagonist? When Jack and Abigail return to the grisly sight, their distraught reactions confirm it. Yes, yes they did kill the best anti-hero they ever wrote. Fast forward a couple years and now you are Jack. Looking down at not only your father and Uncles grave, but the grave of your mother as well. Alone and still in shock you slowly make your way to Blackwater where you notice a new side-quest. You follow the question marks until you are finally face to face with your fathers murderer, Edgar Ross. In one last duel you send him floating down the Rio Bravo with multiple gunshot wounds. The title appears and the credits roll, leaving you feeling in shock, still a little bit sad, mad, and altogether satisfied. It is an ending that will never be forgotten, and till this day the near sight of a western adventure or the mention of Red Dead Redemption makes me want to start the story all over again.
