It has persisted throughout all those countless sequels with its playful simplicity; it can be recognised in an instant by even the most casual video game player, and is therefore a pop-culture touchstone as is more than can be said for most of the tunes on this list. It's also been covered to death, with its simple notation and structure allowing musicians to be inventive with it on a wide variety of instruments. It's not the most technically proficient or objectively excellent tune on this list - in fact, far from it - but it's probably the catchiest, and definitely the one - outside of Mortal Kombat, which tells us during the song - that can be identified by the largest number of people.
