10 Unforgettable Video Game Theme Tunes

2. Sonic the Hedgehog

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qYziluDD5I Even before the Sonic theme actually starts, Sonic the Hedgehog has us in its thrall with that memorable "Sega!" shout, leading into what is one of the most brilliant and enduring theme tunes of all time. It all begins with three drum beats, and then bursts into a jubilant verse that's really more of a jingle than an outright theme song, because it only lasts about fifteen seconds at most. Not only the opening theme, but the entire game's score as a whole helped make Sonic seem so much cooler than its main rival at the time, Mario, accentuated by the more accomplished visuals also. While Nintendo largely kept Sega in their place during their feud, Sonic, complete with its trippy, hyperactive score, definitely helped the company to pull the lead back for a little while. It's a surprise that the composer, Masato Nakamura, didn't compose any more video game scores, and instead stuck to his popular Japanese band, Dreams Come True instead.
