10 Unintentionally Hilarious 90s Horror Video Games

5. Resident Evil (1996)

Alone in the dark
Capcom

The original Resident Evil game is a classic horror title in every sense of the word, and fans of modern horror video game experiences owe just about everything to this revolutionary release. Praise for this game is wide-spread and well-recognized, though its faults are perhaps often a bit understated.

Released during the height of the mid-90s FMV craze, the original PlayStation disc included a series of fully-acted video sequences. Capcom clearly wasted no time in dragging their actors out of the dumpster behind their studio, and these brief clips are so incredibly funny that they nearly ruin the tone of the entire game. Often considered to be a masterclass in atmosphere building otherwise, it isn't surprising to see these goofy little segments axed in subsequent releases.

The original Resident Evil title has been re-released and remastered nearly more times than anyone would care to count, and many of these quirks and oddities have since been expunged. That said, few will ever forget the weird missteps present in the PlayStation version, and twenty-two years after release, there are still plenty of laughing fits caused by the legendarily-bad "Jill sandwich" line.
