10 UNSETTLING Facts About Your Favourite Games
3. Messages Written in Blood (Resident Evil)
Messages written in blood are a staple of horror storytelling. If you expect to walk into a spooky mansion without spotting some bloody prose on the walls, then you clearly don't watch many scary flicks. Despite this, the original Resident Evil game didn't make use of this trope - or, more accurately, the final version didn't. The unfinished product, however, was a different story.
Before the genre-changing Resident Evil 1996 hit shelves, cuts were made here and there. One disturbing example of removed content was multiple bloody messages written in varying places across Spencer Manor, documented here on the Wiki. One of these messages would have read as such, "Painful breathing... someone stop this suffering," which is a pretty terrifying final message to leave behind. Another, however, would have been a little more familiar to Capcom fans, as it would have read, "For God's sake, get out!" a direct reference to the Famicom game Sweet Home.
Content gets cut from games all the time, but thinking about how hair-raising these messages would have been is enough to chill you to the bone.
