10 Unsettling Horror Games With TERRIFYING Sound Design
4. Slender: The Arrival
A fully-realised version of the free-to-play internet sensation Slender: The Eight Pages - which was itself based on an internet myth inspired by photoshop competition entry - Slender: The Arrival gave people a whole new reason to be afraid of the long-limbed, faceless creature.
Following in the same vain as The Eight Pages, this seriously unnerving game will see players frantically searching large abandoned areas for specific items needed to progress. Of course, things aren't that simple as players - armed only with a flashlight - will need to do so while being stalked by the sharply-dressed creature and some other, equally scary pursuers who feature in other levels.
While the game's repetitive nature has been criticised for dulling the overall scariness, the sound design is what has been hailed for maintaining its tense atmosphere. Through a combination of a subdued droning soundtrack and emphasised diagetic sound, the effect is one of constant suspense that teases something could happen at any moment.
And it often does as piercing static cuts through the quiet to let you know Slenderman is close. Even if you don't manage to catch a glimpse of him, the sound let's you know he's there and its time to run.
