10 Unsettling Horror Games With TERRIFYING Sound Design
3. Yomawari: Night Alone
Don't let this game's cutesy art style fool you, Yomawari: Night Alone - alongside its sequel Yomawari: Midnight Shadow - is a lesser-known survival horror game that's just as capable of crawling under your skin in the best possible way.
Originally launching on the PlayStation Vita back in 2015 (later being released alongside its sequel as a collection on Switch), this game will see players as a young girl searching for her missing dog and younger sister after barely avoiding a fatal accident. It quickly becomes apparent that something isn't right with the small town you explore as a whole host of spooky spirits begin to appear.
Proving that silence is just as an effective means of effective sound design, there is a notable absence of music in the game. Instead, the ambient diagetic sounds give the world an eerie stillness.
One sound that will leave you shaken, though, is that of the character's heartbeat. Another example of a warning system, this alerts players to when they're near a spirit. Only visible when hit with your flashlight, this results in some incredibly tense moments of finding the malevolent spirit before they catch up with you.
