10 Upcoming 2019 Video Games You Could Totally Miss
9. Yooka-Laylee & The Impossible Lair
The original Yooka-Laylee was a valiant Banjo-Kazooie spiritual successor, even if the execution of the Kickstarter game left a little to be desired. Despite not quite living up to its potential though, the game still had considerable goodwill, and has funnelled that into a side scrolling sequel.
This time around, it feels like Donky Kong Country, rather than Banjo-Kazooie, was the major inspiration. While the first game fell short of the series it was aping, the sequel might prove a more fitting tribute.
By scaling back the ambition from the roving 3D nature of the first game, the more classic platform approach could patch up the issues of the first instalment. While it was buzzing with ideas, you were left feeling that the developers had perhaps overstretched themselves.
Hopefully The Impossible Lair will master the basics without over-complication.
There’s still some 3D stuff with the overworld, but the majority of the game takes place on 2D levels. Even then though, the trailer makes it clear that there’s multiple pathways and several different alleyways to traverse; just as you’d expect from a collectathon platformer.
