Yet another example of a single video game forcing itself into the zeitgeist so quickly that it caught the attention of Hollywood, samurai action-adventure Ghost of Tsushima was greenlit for a film just nine months after its release.

Director Chad Stahelski is the perfect man for the job for a couple of reasons. First of all, his filmography is perfect for Tsushima’s brutal yet slick style as he previously directed all four of the stylish John Wick films. More than that, he speaks with reverence about the importance of being true to the culture of the video game.

In an interview with Collider, Stahleski said:

“Honestly, we'd try to do it all in character. A complete Japanese cast, in Japanese. Sony is so on board with backing us on that. I've been going to Japan since I was 16. I have a love of the country, love of the people, love of the language. To try to direct not only in my language, but someone else's and culturally shift my mindset to bring a part [of] that in a cool way that still entices a Western audience.”

Whilst the idea of a big budget film releasing in the West exclusively with subtitles would’ve previously been unheard of, the success of Korean productions Squid Game and Parasite have been instrumental in shifting expectations. If Sony is indeed happy with Stahelski’s desire for integrity, it stands to reason that they trust him to deliver the goods.
