10 Upcoming Video Games That Have Already Pissed Fans Off
8. Why So White? - Final Fantasy XVI
Production on the upcoming Final Fantasy XVI seems to have gone shockingly smoothly for the standards of the franchise, enough that it's set to release incredibly soon - this coming June, in fact.
But there has been considerable fan push-back against the game's blatant lack of diversity among its cast, with there being scarcely a single Black or non-white character among the residents of the game's focal locale, Valisthea.
The game's producer, Naoki Yoshida, was quizzed on this by IGN late last year, and gave a response that proved quite dissatisfactory with the fanbase indeed:
"Ultimately, we felt that while incorporating ethnic diversity into Valisthea was important, an over-incorporation into this single corner of a much larger world could end up causing a violation of those narrative boundaries we originally set for ourselves. The story we are telling is fantasy, yes, but it is also rooted in reality."
It naturally rubbed many the wrong way that Final Fantasy XVI, a highly fantastical and "unrealistic" game filled with ridiculous creatures and magical abilities, is nevertheless attempting to replicate the racial demographics of medieval Europe in a "plausible" way.
Even ignoring the fact that non-white people absolutely did exist in medieval Europe, it's a lazy cop-out of a justification for a baffling lack of representation in one of the biggest games of the year.
