Final Fantasy has dominated the Japanese RPG scene for decades now, but the latest releases haven't been quite as popular or critically-acclaimed as past hits, with many hardcore fans growing disinterested in the franchise since the release of FFXIII, but Square Enix just keeps on churning them out.

Known for their gripping stories, charismatic characters and beautiful soundtracks, the Final Fantasy games have blown gamers away since the very first release, way back in 1987, with the franchise going on to spawn lots of sequels and spin-offs.

As well as the 15 main series games, many of which have been remastered and rereleased several times, we've also had the Tactics and Legend series, a myriad of Chocobo games, the Dissidia fighting series, mobile games, and more. Even the wildly popular Kingdom Hearts series resulted as a kind of crossover between Final Fantasy and Disney.

Final Fantasy VII is getting a major remake and has gone down in history as one of the most popular video games of all time, with VI, VIII, IX, and X all having legions of fans too, but the series has been accused of losing its way with more recent titles.
