10 Video Game Clichés Everyone Is Sick Of

3. Fixed Save Points

Dark Souls Bonfire

Now we’re getting a little controversial. Much like an invisible wall, everyone likes their games to save differently.

As a person with over 500 saves in Skyrim who absolutely refuses to save in the same slot twice in case I need to reload a specific point, you can probably guess that I’m a fan of manual saving.

Would I like all games to have manual saving? Sure. Would it ruin certain genres? Probably. So, I’m not going to push that one, but I would propose that most of us aren’t a fan of fixed save points.

These aren’t checkpoints, but the save locations you need to trek to if you want to save your game at any point in time. It’s more common in older games like Metroidvanias, Final Fantasy games, Resident Evil, and certain JRPGs, and in the case of Resident Evil you could argue it effectively adds to the tension. In pretty much every other case though, a save system like this is exhausting, especially when you just need to save and put the game down for a bit and you can’t do that without trekking back to somewhere in the game you don’t really want to be.

It’s a cliche that’s wearing off, but it’s definitely still present in games today. Let me know down in that comment section what your game saving preferences are.
