In the Elder Scrolls games, you're typically some kind of hero of prophecy, whether it's the Nerevarine in Morrowind or the Dragonborn in Skyrim.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion takes a different approach to the matter. Although your character becomes a hero and even a god later down the line, the true protagonist who saves the world from the Oblivion Crisis is the inconspicuous NPC you're tasked with saving early in the game.

Martin Septim, the secret son of Uriel Septim VII, is the true protagonist of Oblivion. From the moment you meet him as a cloistered monk, the entire main story of the game revolves around you helping him fulfil his destiny. You help him become the new Emperor of Cyrodiil, secure his throne, and at the end, you give him the amulet that he uses to transform into a dragon and push Mehrunes Dagon and his deadric army back into the hellish pits of Oblivion.

Sure, you might be the hero of Kvatch, but at the end of the day, Martin Septim is the savior of the entire world.
