10 Video Game Companions So Powerful They Made YOU Feel Like The Sidekick

2. Hero - Dragon Quest V

The Dragon Quest series tends to follow the typical JRPG trope of the player character being the chosen hero who's prophesied to destroy whatever evil is endangering the world.

Dragon Quest V is the interesting exception to this format, as it is the one Dragon Quest game in which you don't play as the chosen one and instead take on the mantle of being the hero's mentor.

Yes, in Dragon Quest V, your goal is to save the world by finding and then training someone who is better suited for it. You spend the bulk of the story searching for the chosen one, referred to by default as simply Hero, and then when you finally find him, you take him under your wing and watch as he slowly grows into his destiny.

It's a brilliant subversion of the typical narrative of Dragon Quest games that gives the player a chance to experience a more humble role in the story and see what it's like to live in Dragon Quest's world without having the burden of saving the world on your shoulders.

Well, at least not entirely.
