10 Video Game Crossovers That Should Happen

4. Mario - Sonic

sonicmario Technically we have already had this crossover but I€™m not going to count a sports game as a true crossover. Mario and Sonic have been rivals since the hedgehog€™s inception in 1991. Admittedly Sonic€™s star has fallen a lot over the past decade but nonetheless the two carry enough star power and nostalgic value to make a crossover a massively memorable event. As the world of video games evolve so must the characters. So age more gracefully than others, which was the case with Mario and Sonic. The plumber took to the evolution of 3D and open-worlds like a duck to water, whereas the hedgehog, who thrived in the 2D side-scrolling world, fell to the wayside. There have been some decent Sonic games but it€™s never been the same since Sega called it a day as a home console creator, that was the day Mario won. I don€™t need to explain who the characters are or why they€™re so successful, the question is why hasn€™t a crossover already happened?! These are arguably the two most iconic video game characters ever and they€™re never truly crossed paths in a game. I think we€™d all love to see a real open-world 3D game that incorporates the best of both worlds. While Sonic games have been hit and miss, the formula of running gets a tad old after a while, it would be given a fresh lease of life when coupled with Mario. Mario games are rarely disappointments. Adding Sonic to that formula can€™t be a bad thing, can it? I wouldn€™t imagine so but stranger things have happened. Much like Jak & Daxter and Ratchet and Clank these two worlds could easily collide with little to no explanation, fans won€™t care why they€™ve suddenly stumbled upon one another. It€™s fairly easy to imagine a plot in which Bowser has enlisted the help of Dr Eggman to finally defeat Mario, and hearing of the plot Sonic comes to help said plumber. Of course there could be a litany of mini-encounters too, from Tails meeting Luigi, Peach trading beauty secrets with Amy Rose and Shadow hatching plots with Wario. Even just picturing the spectacle of the characters on screen together and the humour to be had from such scenes would make the game worthwhile. The mixture of gameplay and aesthetics would be more than enough to please fans of both series€™ and be a critical success. There€™s a lot to be had from a Mario X Sonic game, which, given the success of their sports games, isn€™t out of the question. Hopefully.
