10 Video Game Deaths You Were Powerless To Stop
6. You, Sarah Lyons OR Everyone - Fallout 3
The original ending of Fallout 3 was such a misguided exercise in ripping away player choice that Bethesda actually ended up "fixing" the ending in the Broken Steel DLC.
However, the pre-update version of the game ended with the player forced to decide who will enter the irradiated control room and input a code, saving the day but subjecting themselves to a lethal dose of radiation in the process.
Despite being surrounded by cohorts, all of your pals give hilariously flimsy excuses for not volunteering themselves, all of which are basically variations on not wanting to interfere with your destiny.
This is especially egregious in the case of the mutant Fawkes, who could do the job without suffering any adverse effects.
Your rather depressing series of choices, then, are to lay down your own life and input the code, send Sarah Lyons into the control room instead, or do nothing and wait for the facility to explode a few minutes later.
It was such a lamely transparent attempt to funnel the player down a set story path, and fans were irate enough that Bethesda eventually changed the ending in Broken Steel, allowing players to send in Fawkes or their other radiation-immune pals to save the day instead. Justice!
