In 2012, Obsidian Entertainment gave the world a lesson on how to run a Kickstarter campaign.

For years, the company known for bringing the world some of the best isometric RPGs of all time struggled to get the funding and were on the brink of closure. All they wanted to do was deliver a traditional RPG experience in the vein of the legendary Baldur's Gate. They finally turned to the fans, hoping to get their project off the ground. What followed was a swell of support, smashing targets and expectations to give Obsidian the assets to build their vision and save their studio.

But now they had to deliver.

What Obsidian did brilliantly was kept their devoted backers informed throughout the development cycle. There were teases and releases, such as art assets and level designs as well as transparent news about publishers and possible delays. This meant that by the release of Pillars Of Eternity in 2015, fans and backers knew that the game was in every way the vision that they had supported.

Of course, Pillars Of Eternity was amazing. Obsidian managed to marry the nostalgia of early Obsidian RPGs with modern touches to produce a game for both them and the players.
