10 Video Game Difficulty Modes You Must Complete Without Dying Once

1. Doom and Doom Eternal - Ultra Nightmare Mode

Doom Eternal
iD Software

Finally, we have the revived Doom franchise, a masterwork of the FPS genre. It led the gaming industry's move away from over saturated modern military shooters and into something more fast and frenetic. Above all else, it constantly makes you feel like a total badass taking on the demons of hell.

The task of providing a suitable challenge to players through the years has varied in size and scope. In the original titles, ID Software ranked the difficulties similar to the game's predecessor Wolfenstein 3D. This ranged from "I'm too young to die" (Easy) to "Ultraviolence" (Hard).

When Doom made its grand return, it added two new facets to the difficulty, aiming to appeal to the most hardcore elements of its playerbase. These were "Nightmare" (Very Hard) and "Ultra Nightmare" (Very Hard with Permadeath enabled). These are the most gruelling challenges Doom 2016 and its successor Doom Eternal have to offer.

In the latter, you get taken out by the demons just one time and it's back to the beginning of the game. To best this mode, you must constantly be on the move, take next to no hits and in Eternal's case, be on constant vigilance for the arrival of the Marauder. Truly you are the master of Doom if you can make it through this hellish mode.
