Assassin's Creed III opens with the player taking control of Haytham Kenway. Although players initially assume Haytham is the main character and an Assassin, he's later revealed as the Grand Master of the Templar - the Assassins' sworn enemies.

The story then skips ahead, showcasing the game's true protagonist, Connor, who happens to be Haytham's bastard son. After his mother is killed by Haytham's second-in-command, Charles Lee, Connor vows to destroy the Templar.

Since Lee murdered Connor's mother in cold blood, it's understandable why he is the last villain that Connor faces. But there's no question Haytham is a superior foe by a large margin.

The main campaign spends hours fleshing out his character, allowing the player to understand where he's coming from. Being the hero's father, the riveting interactions between the pair are among the game's highlights. Adrian Hough's performance as Haytham is so compelling, it's hard not to be swayed by his words.

Even though Connor has more motivation to hate Lee, he's simply not that compelling. The fact that their final battle is a glorified chase sequence further highlights Lee was the wrong guy to serve as the antagonist.
