Over the past 20-plus years, racing fans have been treated to numerous titles with which to quench their thirst for fast-paced vehicular competition (including delightful new entries in the Mario Kart, Sonic Racing, Gran Turismo, and Forza Motorsport series).

Nevertheless, there were many extraordinary things about 2003’s GameCube-only F-Zero GX that’ve kept it in gamers’ hearts alongside those fresher alternatives. For instance, there’s its intoxicating futuristic look; shockingly fast but fluid gameplay; robust roster of vehicles (nearly 30); distinctive personality; intimidating difficulty (requiring near-perfect precision); captivating maps; and satisfying story mode.

Clearly, all those attributes – and more – contribute to its sustained ranking as one of the greatest racing video games of all time.

Naturally, devoted drivers have been clamouring for a sequel, a remake, or at least a contemporary port of it for nearly two decades. They never have – and probably never will – get any of that, though, because the series has pretty much been dormant since 2004 (aside from some handheld iterations and 2023’s battle royale retro throwback, F-Zero 99).

Sure, F-Zero GX will be a launch title for the Switch 2’s online Nintendo Classics library, but only a small percentage of modern gamers will have access to it.
