4. Kratos In Mortal Kombat 9 - PlayStation 3 & PS Vita
As much as people adore the more recent Mortal Kombat X, Mortal Kombat 11, and Mortal Kombat 1, a lot of diehard franchise fans feel that 2011's soft reboot (appropriately called Mortal Kombat) is the pinnacle of NetherRealm Studios’ primary property.
With its inventive reimagining of fundamental lore, stellar roster, and impeccable mixture of 2D and 3D fighting, it’s easy to understand why. That said, the PS3 and PlayStation Vita editions had the edge for one simple reason: they featured God of War’s eternally angry anti-hero, Kratos.
Naturally, he came with his own tie-in storyline and ending; moves (including Zeus’ Rage and Apollo’s Bow); and stage (Chamber of the Flame, which had multiple stage fatalities). Kratos could also perform a unique Babality, X-Ray attack (Nemean Cestus), and two Fatalities (Blade of Olympus and Medusa’s Gaze).
All players of Mortal Kombat could beat each other up as DLC add-ons such as Skarlet and A Nightmare on Elm Street’s Freddy Krueger, but understandably, only PlayStation players were able to duke it out as the coolest combatant of all: the Ghost of Sparta.
Sadly, Mortal Kombat 2011 isn’t accessible on PS4 or PS5, so good luck trying to play it now without going retro.
