4. Mortal Kombat - The Mystery Of Ermac

This is one of the best examples of a video game rumour that gained so much notoriety over time, the developers felt the only way to put it to bed was to make it a part of the series.

Mortal Kombat first made its mark in the arcades in the early nineties, and quickly gained notoriety for its gore and brutal fighting style. There was a limited roster of characters, in particular two ninjas who were visually only distinguishable by their colours.

Rumours swirled that a glitch called error macro, or 'Ermac' for short, would turn Sub Zero, a blue ninja, into a red ninja. In the pre-internet days, it was very easy for unfounded rumours about games to circulate, as it was much harder to validate or disprove theories.

The developers strongly denied the existence of Ermac, saying that such an error simply did not exist. However, this legendary rumour gained so much momentum over time, that the developers decided to call the fans bluff and make it real.

In Mortal Kombat 3, the warrior known as Ermac was introduced to the franchise, and he has become a fan favourite ever since.
