10 Video Game Fan Theories That Became Fact

3. Metal Gear Solid 5 - Nuclear Disarmament

Rumours were rife upon the release of Metal Gear Solid 5 that a secret cutscene would trigger if all the nukes in the in-game universe had been disarmed by all players.

This was a masterstroke by Hideo Kojima, as he knew it was very unlikely to be achieved. Perhaps it was a riff on humanity always looking to arm itself, and would not be able to focus their efforts on a collective strategy for the betterment of mankind.

In 2015 the rumour was confirmed as the cutscene in question triggered in the PC version. Ironically, the scene didn't trigger because of players vying for collective world peace, but because of a bug in the game.

Although some fans were happy to have the theory validated, there was also annoyance that such a powerful in-game message had not been thought through enough to make it work in practise.

What happens in this hidden cutscene? It's predominantly a monologue about how we must pass on the dangers of nuclear warfare to the next generation.

Ironically, even though this theory is now beyond doubt, it has still brought the player base no closer to achieving total disarmament.
