10 Video Game Fates So Hilarious They Were Horrifying
2. The Die-o-Ramas - Crash Tag Team Racing (2005)
Unlike the newer 2019 Crash Tag Racing release, the 2005 original was pretty dang violent. There was no blood or gore, of course, but it maintained the cartoony violence that likely reminded many of the Simpsons' Itchy and Scratchy cartoon.
This was best shown in the "Die-o-Ramas" littered throughout the various levels. They were events you could trigger that would give you a little scene of Crash suffering a terrible death - which wouldn't kill you, but rather just add a little extra scene to your game.
Though they're all exaggerated deaths done for fun, there's something about the idea of countless players cheerfully torturing the bandicoot that feels a little bit unsettling. It's all meant well, of course, but it is also a sort of cartoon version of Saw, and it feels very surreal to realise that.
Plus, the other characters in the game seem to know about these deaths, which raises a whole selection of questions. Do the others know Crash is basically immortal? Do they take joy in seeing his hubris lead to a series of god awful fates? It makes you think.
