If you heard that a popular video game series was going to introduce non-fungible tokens, you'd likely assume a company like Ubisoft or EA were behind it, right? That certainly sounds like the kind of thing they'd do - especially given that Ubisoft has done it. But, you might be surprised to learn that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, of all things, came close to doing it. What?

GSC Game World, the developers behind this survival horror FPS, originally intended to introduce an NFT Metaverse into the long-awaited sequel. According to Business Insider, this feature would have used blockchain technology to allow players to purchase NFT non-player characters, which would travel in the "Stalker Metaverse," allowing them to own a small piece of the game for themselves. Which, yes, sounds ridiculous.

The backlash to this was fast and severe, so much so that the devs took to social media to announce that they were removing all of these NFT elements (via X). Gamers spoke up with their hatred of this feature, and, like an unwitting player running into a Chimera, it was swiftly axed.
