4. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Square Enix's cyberpunk RPG, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, is also undergoing negotiations with film studios. Director Scott Derrickson has enthusiastically undertaken the project alongside writer C. Robert Cargill - a duo recently noted for their work on the horror film Sinister. The game proved a hit due to it's sheer complexity as well as it's unique thematic elements. Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a prequel to it's predecessor Deus Ex - released on Playstation 2 and Windows/Mac OS in 2000 - and thus provides a potential for a franchise adaptation. In Human Revolution, augmented protagonist, Adam Jensen, unravels conspiracies during his quest for answers amongst a technology-driven society set in the year 2027. Having been forced to undergo a lifesaving augmentation process, the game explores everything from the ethics of trans-humanism, through the player's modification process, to the commodification of intelligence within Sarif Industries - the forerunner of advanced technology of whom Jensen provides security for. Poverty and the effects of such an advanced societal system are also explored, offering a multi-faceted gameplay experience that is submerged in much larger philosophical themes - even the title 'Deus Ex' hints towards its implicative nature. Through 3D technology, the augmentation process experienced within the game, paired with the hacking of computers and technologically advanced systems could prove an immersive experience. CBS Films and Eidos Montréal have secured the rights to the film and we can expect further information in the near future as Derrickson and Cargill edge closer towards the active production process.
