10 Video Game Film Adaptations In Production Right Now
3. Heavenly Sword
Heavenly Sword, a hack and slash game developed by Ninja Theory, is currently being adapted into a feature length CGI animation. Set for release in June 2014, the film features the voice talents of Anna Torv - who reprises her role as protagonist Nariko, Alfred Molina as King Bohan - previously voiced by Andy Serkis - and Thomas Jane as Loki, a character new to this adaptation. Other actors appearing in the film are veteran voice actors Nolan North and Barry Dennen. The film's producers, Brad Foxhoven and David Wohl admitted that the project was initially an experiment between Blockade Entertainment and Sony, of whom produced the game. Foxhoven explained: "The objective was to use existing video game assets and development materials, along with various game pipeline techniques, to produce a feature length film. By capitalising on the enhanced production efficiencies, the additional resources and investment could then be placed on the actual production itself." Having showcased the film at Cannes Film Festival, the concept gained a particularly positive reception and resulted in financial interest granting the once experimental idea to developed into a full-fledged film. Differentiating from other adaptations on this list, Heavenly Sword remains the only adaptation to be animated. Arguably, this will prove to be the adaptation that will offer the most likeness to it's predecessor as it remains computer generated. In comparison to other game adaptations, we can expect that the fan reception will notably positive as the protagonists voice actor returns and the cinematic themes exhibited in the game will no doubt return in this feature length film. Currently in post-production, Playstation has announced that we can expect to see Heavenly Sword in Spring 2014.
