10 Video Game Fourth Wall Breaks That Came Out Of NOWHERE

6. Minerva Talking About The End Of The World - Assassin's Creed 2

The Assassin’s Creed plotline about the Isu’s precursor civilization is generally considered to be the less captivating part of the series, but even if you don’t find it to be interesting, if you’ve ever played Assassin’s Creed 2, it definitely managed to capture your attention at least once.

And that’s because the title's Isu subplot features the one and only moment when the developers decide to break the fourth wall.

At one point in the story, Ezio meets Minerva, an Isu scientist who explains to him the mysterious past of her people and warns him about the upcoming cataclysm.

That is, him and you—the player.

As Minerva delivers her exposition, she suddenly turns her head towards the camera and starts addressing you directly! The fourth wall break is completely unexpected but definitely deliberate, seeing as Ezio comments on it shortly after.

Now, it’s more likely than not that Minerva’s warning is meant to be addressed to Desmond watching Ezio’s memories, but when Assassin’s Creed 2 was originally released, a lot of people believed the message was directed at them specifically.

Seeing how effective the sudden shift was at spooking the player base, it’s safe to say this was likely Ubisoft’s intention.
