10 Video Game Guinness World Records That Will Blow You Away
1. Highest Score For Donkey Kong Arcade
If you've followed gaming news in 2018, (or even mainstream news sources), you'll likely have read the furore about Billy Mitchell. Mitchell, former holder of the Guinness World Record for attaining the highest ever score on Donkey Kong arcade, was stripped of the record earlier this year by Twin Galaxies - the official scorekeeping website for almost every game conceivable.
After a series of posts by various investigators on Twin Galaxies and other forums, it was decided that Billy Mitchell's score was achieved using an emulator, not the actual arcade cabinet. A statement released by Guinness World Records said: “The Guinness World Records titles relating to Mr. Mitchell’s highest scores on ‘Donkey Kong’ have all been disqualified due to Twin Galaxies being our source of verification for these achievements.”
The highest score set for Donkey Kong arcade now belongs to Robbie Lakeman. It was set on 2 February 2018 and verified 23 March 2018, again by Twin Galaxies. The saga rumbles on, however, as Mitchell has promised to provide documents and witnesses that will perhaps validate his record again.
