10 Video Game Heroes Forced To Die For The Greater Good

4. Mordin Solus - Mass Effect 3

Bioshock infinite
BioWare

First seen in the second entry of the Mass Effect series, the Salarian scientist Mordin Solus has a bit of tunnel vision for the bigger picture. The issue with this mindset, however, is that sometimes people get hurt along the way. Sometimes an entire species is hurt.

Mordin's knowledge of genetics led him to help in the development of the genophage. The genophage is a biological weapon used against the Krogan race to quell the ongoing rebellions. The weapon targeted their ability to successfully reproduce, thus leaving the species on the edge of absolute extinction.

Returning in Mass Effect 3, Mordin learns of a way of reversing the effects of the genophage. It is revealed that the Salarian hierarchy knew of the cure all along but had sabotaged the Shroud facility, and offered Commander Shepard a compromise: cover up the sabotage and gain the backing of the Salarian race against the Reapers.

After Mordin learns of the sabotage, he decides he must release the cure for the Krogan race. Should Shepard allow him to enter the Shroud, which is on the verge of destruction, Mordin will just be able to release the cure before the facility blows up, killing him instantly.

To give his life to undo his biggest regret and save an entire species is a heroic way to go.
