4. Underwater Levels

Admittedly, this one has seen much less use in recent years, but once upon a time, you couldn't pick up a AAA title without suffering an underwater level at some point.

Whether it's Sonic the Hedgehog's Labyrinth Zone, Ocarina of Time's Water Temple, Majora's Mask's Great Bay Temple, Tomb Raider II's 40 Fathoms or any other sub-aquatic nightmare, we've all experienced an absolute hellscape of a level set below the waves.

The controls in these levels are usually clunky and awkward, and it's usually nigh on impossible to see where you're going. Then there's the incredibly stressful oxygen gauge or breath bubbles counting down your impending death, and you're forced to find the conveniently placed air bubble to refill your lungs in the hopes of making it past the level alive.

They may have been used as a way to break up the gameplay and add some variety to a title, but they remain, to this day, the worst part of some otherwise stellar games.
