10 Video Game Mechanics You Totally Ignored (But Shouldn't Have)

1. Shhhh - Alien: Isolation

The tagline of Alien is, "In space, nobody can hear you scream." This is ironic, since sound is exactly what gets you killed in Alien: Isolation.

Set 15 years after the events in Ridley Scott's Alien, the nerve-shredding survivor horror centres around Ellen Ripley's daughter, Amanda, who must traverse through a space vessel while being pursued by a Xenomorph. The acid-blooded parasite has astounding hearing, so players need to stay quiet while opening doors and hiding in lockers.

However, players are often mystified since there are times when the Xenomorph finds them with ease, no matter how careful they were. The hostile extra-terrestrial can't conventionally see, so there's no logical explanation how it can find you, especially if you didn't make a peep.

However, the explanation behind the Xenomorph's detection skills is genuinely mind-blowing. If you're playing on a system that supports voice input, the creature can hear you, the player. If you speak or breathe heavily, the AI interprets it as a noise within the room, giving away your position.

Although this audio mechanic is gob-smacking, players will be relieved to know they can turn it off, making sneaking around much easier.
