3. Brutal Legend Squandering Its Massive Potential

Brutal Legend
Double Fine

On paper, this sounds like it could be special. You have Double Fine, one of the most renowned studios in the world, partnering up with legendary singer/actor/all-around-legend Jack Black to make a game about heavy metal, set in an open-world heavy metal universe. It's a metal fan's wet dream - even including the voices of such superstars as Lemmy and Ozzy Osbourne.

It's not a bad game at all, but Brutal Legend massively squandered everything it had going for it. The reason? The god awful strategy elements which were randomly tacked on to the game. If they'd simply left it is a sprawling, action-packed metal-shredding thrill ride, it could have truly been something special.

Here's hoping that Double Fine's recent acquisition by Microsoft lets them have another stab at the game with a sequel and/or a remake. It's a game with a huge amount of potential, and with the right backing and the right mechanics, this could still be a series that lives up to its own hype.
