7. Where's Zelda? - The Legend Of Zelda: Link's Awakening
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening opens with our hero washing up on Koholint Island. After he's taken in and cared for by a young girl called Marin, the Hero of Time is told to seek out the eight Instruments of the Sirens if he intends to return home.
As you set out on your adventure, you'll be expected to navigate through dungeons, scramble for Rupees, solve puzzles, upgrade your Hearts, open treasure chests, hack at every Moblin you see and get electrocuted by the Shopkeeper (that's probably the best part).
While you go through this rigamarole, there's one thought that should keep playing in your mind over and over.
"Where's Zelda?"
To the surprise of many first-time players, the Hylian sovereign never shows up in Link's Awakening, and is only mentioned one time. Understandably, gamers were a little bit confused by this revelation since, y'know, she's the title character!
Even though she's been absent in in other Zelda games since, this was the first time players realised the princess wasn't part and parcel with every title, despite her name being slapped on the cartridge.
