When a game is lightyears ahead of its competition, it's easy to accept any minor flaws it may have. We forgave Ocarina of Time for The Water Temple. Even though that hacking mini-game in BioShock drove us crazy, we let it slide. And because the motion-capture for L.A. Noire was out-of-this-world, you'd expect players to cut the game some slack if it had one or two inconsistencies.

But despite the fact Team Bondi's game puts an enormous emphasis on world-building and character development, there are a ton of unresolved issues centred around key players. Throughout the story, you find yourself in major conflict with the gangster Mickey Cohen, your corrupt captain James Donnelly, the tyrannical estate magnate Leland Monroe, the overarching antagonist Harlan Fontaine, and a Black Dahlia-inspired murderer.

Although you expect the protagonist, Cole Phelps, to have some sort of showdown with these five villains, each of them has an underwhelming resolution. Fontaine is killed off-screen. Monroe is taken down, but not by Phelps. Donnelly gets away with his crimes scot-free. Cohen disappears during the third act. And finally, we never learn the serial killer's name, despite being a pivotal adversary for the first ten hours.

Although L.A. Noire deserves praise for its facial animation, performances, music, and cohesive blending of genres, it has a problem with concluding key plotlines in a satisfying manner.
