Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was more than another instalment in Hideo Kojima's beloved franchise. This sequel was advertised as the missing link that bridged the classic games with the Solid series. By focusing on the main villain of the first two entries, Big Boss, this prequel would finally show us how this decorated war hero turned into a moustache-twirling psychopath.

Well, that's what we thought would happen. After working your way through the main campaign for a good 20 hours, we learned... absolutely sod-all.

Now, because each MGS title has an astoundingly complex story, there's always a few issues left unresolved. But this felt different, since The Phantom Pain failed to give us what it was selling. The commercials depicted Boss drenched in blood while mourning his fallen comrades, implying he snapped after experiencing a deeply personal tragedy.

Unfortunately, this image (and many others) were completely absent from the finished product.

Because of these issues, as well as the abrupt ending, gamers weren't surprised to learn The Phantom Pain had a deluge of cut content. Due to time restraints, massive chunks of gameplay were removed, which heavily impaired level structure and the narrative.

Even though The Phantom Pain received positive reviews, die-hard fans felt the game was heavily lacking.
