4. Bandit Attack - Blood Omen: Legacy Of Kain (1996)
The first entry in the iconic Legacy Of Kain series, this title follows the titular nobleman as he searches for a means to cure his vampiric curse while battling an order of evil sorcerers.
Before players venture on this epic quest, the game begins in a tavern where Kain is refused service. Upon leaving the establishment, the hero is met with someone shouting "That's him!" before he's set upon by a group of bandits.
Players are then thrown into a huge fight before they even know how the combat works. No matter how many of the thugs players manage to defeat, though, the enemies will simply keep spawning until players are eventually defeated.
While plunging players straight into a tough fight is an effective way of showing just how under-powered they are at this point, it's still usually possible to come out on top with the right mix of skill and determination. In this case, though, Kain's death is necessary for the story. If players defeated the bandits, then Kain wouldn't get his vampire powers and there'd consequently be no Legacy Of Kain.
Dying in an unwinnable fight is a therefore small price to pay to experience this incredible game.
