10 Video Game Openings Designed To Make You Quit

It’s impossible for any list about irritating openings for video games to not include Driver. Given a list of tricks to execute in an abandoned parking-lot, the frustration of repeatedly failing to complete all maneuverers in the sixty-seconds required is infamous.

The game never tells you how to pull-off the moves and every time you fail it berates you with gangsters who call you a ‘loser’. Not only do you have to contend with being ridiculed and the unnerving ticking of a stop-watch, you must also avoid contact with parked vehicles (three-strikes and you’re out).

Naturally, this all culminates with controllers being smashed against walls, discs being snapped in half and every failing driver cursing the game for existing. It’s a shame too as, beyond its punishing introduction, Driver is a tour-de-force that still rivals blistering car-chases in Hollywood movies.

Whoever said it was a good idea to start the game with an unhelpful tutorial had an obvious desire to sabotage the project. Some gamers can overcome and supress the overwhelming emotions of anger associated with failing to progress for hours straight, but many can't and they understandably miss out on an incredible game.
