10 Video Game Openings Designed To Make You Quit

3. Kingdom Hearts 2

Driver Game
Square Enix

The original Kingdom Hearts’ opening is a chore, but at least you are only confined to Destiny Islands for a single hour compared to the three-hours of playtime with Roxas.

Roxas is an integral character to both Sora and the series’ story, but his opening prologue should have been cut down in length. Skateboarding around town to deliver letters and make money is a brief and infuriatingly pointless grind, the tournament is an additional and unnecessary tutorial for the combat, and the Seven Wonders of Twilight Town is underwhelming filler.

The exploration of the haunted mansion and the dance with Axel in a ring of fire are excellent, and the prologue does conclude on a memorable and sombre note. It all takes too long to happen though, and the padded discussions about the beach and homework make you glad to see the end of Sora’s clone.

It’s a prologue that many casual fans of the series still dismiss and don’t understand the gravity of, and it’s an introduction of a new character that made gamers – back in 2005 – yearn for its predecessor and the large feet of Sora.
