10 Video Game Plot-Holes You Can't Ignore
5. Half-Life: Alyx - The Ending Breaks The Half-Life 2 Timeline
The only thing more mind-blowing than a Half-Life game actually being released, was that ending. It was jaw-dropping, disorientating and completely breaks Half-Life 2’s timeline.
In Half-Life 2, Alyx prevents Gordon’s arrest at the hands of Combine CP. Should she fail Half-Life 2 and Episodes never happen. Thing is, as per Half-Life: Alyx, the G-man detains Alyx before she can save him.
It gets worse.
The G-man offers Alyx the chance to save her father’s life in the future. However, without Gordon that future cannot come to pass.
It gets even worse.
The G-man claims that he needs Alyx because Gordon is unable to fulfil his duties, referring to the events of Episode One, but by imprisoning Alyx, Gordon never has the chance to not fulfil those duties.
You could argue that we’re dealing with alternate timelines, but a post credits scene has Eli Vance utter the exact same words that the G-man spoke to Alyx to be relayed to him, thereby definitively linking the events of Half Life: Alyx to Episode Two.
And yes, you can argue that a mind-wiped Alyx could still do all she needs to. But then what is the point of Half-Life: Alyx?
Perhaps we didn’t need a new Half-Life game after all.
