7. Abby Kills Joel - The Last of Us Part II
Though many fans of The Last of Us predicted that Joel would likely be killed off in the second game, most surely expected it to come much later - say, at the very end, with Joel heroically sacrificing himself to save Ellie.
But Naughty Dog boldly subverted expectations by having Joel perish just a couple of hours into the roughly 25-hour journey, and in a manner just about nobody saw coming.
Joel is ultimately attacked by Abby, a stranger he rescues from the Infected, and who has quite the bone to pick with him.
She ultimately beats Joel to death with a golf club in front of Ellie - an unflinchingly violent moment which kickstarts the game's entire commentary on the cyclical nature of revenge.
It's also a moment which caused some players to turn on the game before it had even really gotten started, no matter that Abby's vengeful motivations were later revealed - that her father was the doctor Joel murdered at the end of the first Last of Us.
