10 Video Game Plot Twists That Totally BROKE You

6. The Princess Is Fleeing YOU - Braid

Silent Hill 2 Remake
Jonathan Blow

Jonathan Blow's masterful puzzle-platformer Braid offers up a deviously clever spin on the played-out "save the princess" trope, because while protagonist Tim spends the game racing to rescue the princess from a monster, that's totally flipped on its head at the very end.

In the game's final level, where everything except Tim moves in reverse, we appear to see the princess fleeing from a knight and working together with Tim to do so.

However, when time flows forward again, we see that the princess has actually been running from Tim as the knight races to rescue her. It's Tim, not the knight, who is the monster that the princess has been trying to get away from.

While the particulars of Braid's narrative are vague and still very much up for debate - namely, precisely what Tim did to make the princess flee him so doggedly - forcing the audience to reconcile that they were the baddie all along is one hell of a trip.
