10 Video Game Protagonists We Hated

6. Kate Walker - Syberia

Most adventure games let you get to know your central character very well as they’re largely told in third person with a tight story that revolves closely around your protagonist and their journey. That can be a great thing, or it can make you wildly frustrated with them when they won’t execute the most basic of actions to help you progress.

Enter Syberia heroine Kate Walker. I will say I love this series and I am a Kate Walker apologist but here’s the problem - she’s a lawyer, so there’s a bunch of things she just won’t do.

While she is more willing to get her hands dirty as the story wears on, early on she really won’t. Figuratively or literally. One of the game’s earliest puzzles is halted because she refuses to retrieve an oar from the edge of a lakebed because it’s too muddy and her solution is to persuade the local child with a learning disability to do it for her.

Given the game is a grand adventure to a mythical place no one is sure exists this isn’t the most enticing start for the journey or for Kate, but I guess you can’t take the corpo out of the girl. At least, not until the story is almost over.
