10 Video Game Protagonists Who Were Doomed From The Start

2. Noble 6 - Halo: Reach

Persona 3
Bungie

The moment Halo Reach was announced, everyone knew how it was going to end. The first game begins in the aftermath of the planet's destruction at the hands of the Covenant, the Fall of Reach is foundational to the franchise's lore, and the game's many trailers did not shy away from the inevitability of this game's tragic ending.

The fact is, Noble Six died the second he landed on Reach.

The goal of Halo Reach goes from defending Reach from the Covenant to getting its greatest assets off the ground before it's too late, as more and more Covenant ships descend on the doomed planet. One by one, Noble team is brutally killed off by the enemy, until - at long last - it's just Noble Six against an entire planet out to kill him. Naturally, he doesn't last long. Noble Team dies, but their actions ensure that they will never be forgotten.

When writing a prequel, you have no choice creatively but to take into account how the game you are preceding begins. And for a game like Halo Reach, the best way to do that is to lean into the tragedy.
